That picture brings back memories! My first HF rig was a HW-100, older version of the HW-101. Worked OK but I wouldn't want to go back to it! No selectivity on receive!
Current rig is a Kenwood TS-850S/AT which I bought new soon after they came out in 92. I've since tried TS-940, TS-870, Collins S Line, and a few others head to head with my 850 on the same antenna. Kept the 850 because the receiver was better.

I realize this is an old post...but I love old Heathkit gear. I've owned and collected lots of this stuff over there years. Among other rigs, I still have 2 of the HW-101's. One stays up at my parent's house at the lake, the other operates here in Studio B. Despite the typical minor drift during warmup, it has pretty decent receive and puts out a nice solid signal. Was quite a popular rig back in the day!

the HW 101 is my favorite radio out of those i own. the old girl works great and i do use it as often as possible. i do cheat though as i will use my kenwood 570dg to scan the bands and then tune the 101 up and have some fun.
