I would venture a guess that Icom was the only manufacturer to step up to the plate and volunteer to help out with the projects that Ham Nation focuses on. Outright sponsorship I would doubt, but it would seem to me that Icom wants to get involved with the media and help get the word out about amateur radio. This could be strictly from a "we want to sell you our radios" standpoint, but what would be wrong with that?

I've been involved with contacting manufacturers to donate or subsidize prizes and information for hamfests, classes and the like, and the ONLY "big three" radio manufacturer that EVER responded was Icom, and they were VERY generous.

Having headed up a few pretty successful small media projects myself, I can tell you it's hard to get the big names interested in a small production. They don't usually want to "waste" their time and resources on the little guy unless there's a good potential return on their investment. What's Icom's return? Getting folks interested in their D-Star system. Seems to me that other manufacturers are being very tight-lipped about their own new products, while Icom wants to get the word out about their new stuff.

From the standpoint of the producers of the podcast, they don't have huge budgets and need content so they will go with whatever they can get. If Icom was the only manufacturer willing to support them, then that's what you're going to see on the show. I would be pretty certain that if the other big names in amateur radio stepped up, you'd see their stuff more often as well.

And I'm not even an "Icom guy". I have mostly Yaesu equipment with the exception of a couple of Icom HTs.

You forgot about Heil...lol

I would think Icom jumped on board 1st and thats why they are on there. And yes they still want to cram dstar down our throats, I imagine they want to get some money back from it,lol Not to mention they are one of the biggest out there producing more than ham radios, my boat has Icom too.

Great podcast, cracks me up alot ands smoke and solder is funny as heil.
