I am somewhat surprized and appauled at the same time. I thought  this hobby is looking for more people to be interested in learning more.

You will notice that most countries have licenses divided into classes of different levels of skill and knowledge. We all aspire to increase our ability. Some learners are at grave disadvantages and restrictions. For example here in the Philippines, there are many who have the knowledge but lack the money to even take a test let alone buy equipment. Another restriction is language. Imagine learning a new hobby in a language that is not yours? Yet thousands do just that. So when someone tries to learn something like Q codes they are left to personal interpretations of that code. In America we are so organized that we can find Elmers without much trouble but in other countries finding an Elmer can be almost a life-long task. Therefore so many are left to their own interpretation of what certain things mean. It may be surprising to some of you that the tests are not created equal meaning the license may be reciprical but the testing is quite different. Here in the Philippines the technician class test is much harder than the FCC test. So the requirements for knowledge is not standardized.

So what's my point? What may seem entirely a stupid question to you is not because the person asking it is necessarily lacking in gray matter but because they have not had the excellent preparation as we enjoy in the states. I have seen some very unique and effective antennas here in the Philippines. Some towers even made from bamboo. The bottom line is if you treat others with respect, the hobby will go on and on but if you shame someone out of the hobby remember your key will one day fall silent. I hope that it is not indicative of the hobby. I know some come here for a joke and a laugh but others actually use this forum to belittle others...All you are doing is belittling the hobby.

Good point! No ham should belittle another ham for simply asking a question. My opinion: There are no stupid questions but sometimes there are stupid answers...if you want to use these categories at all... hi.  The forum Stupid Questions could be renamed into e.g. Basic Questions or similar. Proposals are invited! Sometimes anyone regardless of licence class has a problem or an issue which might appear simple to someone with the necessary knowledge. This does not imply the person asking a honest question is stupid... To get an answer or a contribution  to answering a simple problem is the purpose of this forum!

"Why is there a Stupid Question Forum?"     Now that is a stupid question.     The previous posts are entirely valid.     There is no stupid question.     A question implies ignorance.     Ignorance is curable.     There is not a person on the planet who is not ignorant for no one knows everything about everything and only the dead are infallible.

Please notice the forum is in the Fun, Humor, Games and joke area..  this is not meant to be serious.  This is a game that is played on many forums... The idea is to post a stupid question and see how creative of an answer you can get....  Settle down... Smiley

Just because we are Amateur Radio Operators doesn't mean we have to be serious all the time or discuss only radio topics.  Lighten up!  Our hobby has many facets -- some serious, some fun.  Our radios aren't going to electrocute us just because we have a little fun once in a while.

Let's ham it up!  That IS what ham radio is for, right?

Q:  Why did the playground cross the road?

Questions are formiable, even to the best prepared.
For the dumbest Child can ask more then the wisest man can answer.

100 years ago, people did not know much if anything about the IONSPHERE or how our radio waves travels from point A to point B.

They couldn't see the different layers, because no one had ever been up there before and no one had a way to measure it or know what it consisted of.

When they discovered the D / E / F layers and understood how radio waves could be bent, reflected, deflected - then they understood more about how our world works and how our solar system was created..

Radio - not computers, not the internet, - just plain old radio.
A question asked by a friend of mine was how can we hear the deep space probes we launched 10 years ago - that are transmitting a signal at the edge of our solar system,  with 16 watts, but we can't hear a FM station 70 miles away with 5,000 watts?

Or - how can we control the mars rover from the earth?
