I have come the conclusion that my radio is smarter than I am.

I own one rig, an IC-746PRO.  I bought it about a month ago used from Universal Radio (Shameless Plug).  I built my dipole, put together my shack and Voila!  I was on the air.

I got on the air almost immediately thanks to the built in antenna tuner and the 1:1 balun that I used to build my antenna.

I figure that the antenna is close since the tuner is rated only at 3:1 mismatch, but I would still like to find out where the antenna is resonant and bring it back to the center of the segment I want (if needed).

So, I turn off the antenna tuner and move the dial around and the auto-tuner kicks in.  I turn off the auto tuner and it still tunes when I hit the CW key or change or change bands.  I turn off antenna switch and it still tunes the antenna.  Turning off the tuner after it tunes works, but the tuning capacitors still stay in the circuit it just doesn't retune.  Basically, I have turned off every tuner feature that I can find and it still tunes the antenna.  I have come to the conclusion that the ONLY way to do this is to:

a. Physically remove the antenna tuner from the radio

or

b. Buy an external antenna analyzer
